Velo am Ostbahnhof: A Stronghold for Steel in Munich
Tucked away on a side street near Munich’s East train station, Velo am Ostbahnhof has been serving Bavarian cyclists for more than 30 years. The shop’s 10-person team is co-led by Marcus Scherb, who first joined as a 16-year-old trainee mechanic. Over two decades later he remains, and since 2018 as co-owner.
“Steel bikes are our territory; we don’t dabble in MTB and only carry a few e-bikes. We specialise in commuting, travel, and in recent years, gravel — specifically, steel gravel bikes. We feel this is the best material for the genre.”
For nearly ten years, Velo has partnered with Tout Terrain. Their Experience Corner showcases almost the entire range, ready to test or order as custom builds.
“There are many great brands out there, but Tout Terrain combines high-quality steel tubing, diverse configurations, and excellent customer service. With a small team and direct points of contact, decisions are quick. Customers notice this too — after years on their bikes, they truly recognise the quality and the benefits of a custom build suited to their needs.”
Munich itself is also part of the appeal. “It’s a city where many road and gravel tours start, with the Isar valley as a green artery leading to everything from local beer gardens to rides all the way to Venice. Munich is simply a great place to ride bikes,” Marcus adds.
Velo’s service philosophy reaches far beyond standard repairs. A recent example: a customer brought in a well-ridden Tanami, asking for upgrades and a fresh coat of paint. Still in love with his bike, the shop organised a complete rebuild — frame refinished by Tout Terrain — giving the bike a true second life.
With decades of experience and a deep passion for steel, Velo am Ostbahnhof has become more than just a shop. It’s a trusted partner for Munich’s cyclists — building custom bikes, keeping them running, and proving that real service doesn’t end at the point of sale.
