TECH-BLOG [4] Shift:R Allroad – The Next Evolution of Pinion Shifting for Gravel and Allroad Bikes
Sometimes the best innovations don't begin with the search for new technology, but with a simple question: Why should you have to choose between a Pinion gearbox and drop handlebars?
Anyone who has spent countless miles on gravel roads, alpine passes, or remote backcountry tracks knows the advantages of a Pinion gearbox. Its fully enclosed design delivers reliable performance in all weather conditions, maintains precise shifting even after thousands of kilometres, and keeps maintenance to an absolute minimum. At the same time, drop handlebars provide exactly the ergonomics performance-oriented riders are looking for: multiple hand positions, confident control, and outstanding comfort—especially on long days in the saddle.
For a long time, however, these two concepts seemed difficult to combine. More than seven years ago, we introduced the Shift:R Road, creating the first successful link between a Pinion gearbox and drop handlebars. The system proved that the strengths of both worlds could work seamlessly together. The new Shift:R Allroad builds on that foundation. It takes the core idea of its predecessor and refines it even further, specifically engineered for the demands of today's gravel bikes, all-road bikes, and fast touring bikes.
Engineered for sporty riding
The Shift:R Allroad replaces the original shifting box of the Pinion C-Line gearbox and enables shifting via Shimano GRX shift/brake levers. This eliminates the traditional twist shifter, allowing riders to change gears exactly where they expect to—directly from the brake levers.
At first glance, this may seem like a small change. On the trail, however, it transforms the entire riding experience. Whether descending fast gravel roads, navigating technical singletrack or climbing long mountain passes, both hands remain securely in their familiar riding position. Shifting and braking happen naturally, without changing your grip, taking a hand off the handlebar or interrupting your riding flow.
For riders coming from a traditional road or gravel bike drivetrain, the Shift:R Allroad feels familiar from the very first ride, combining the intuitive operation of Shimano GRX controls with the renowned reliability of the Pinion gearbox.
All the benefits of the Pinion gearbox are fully retained.
The real strength of the system lies in the fact that it preserves everything riders value about the Pinion gearbox.
All gears remain safely enclosed within the gearbox housing, protected from dirt, water, and dust. As a result, wear and maintenance requirements are kept to an absolute minimum, while shifting performance remains consistently precise—even after many years of use.
This level of reliability is particularly valuable on extended bikepacking adventures or long-distance tours far from the nearest workshop, where dependable equipment is essential. The Shift:R Allroad complements these proven advantages with intuitive shifting that integrates seamlessly into modern drop-bar cockpits.
Mechanical precision without unnecessary complexity
In line with our product philosophy of keeping things as simple, low-maintenance, and repairable as possible, the Shift.R Allroad deliberately avoids unnecessary complexity.
Inside, a fully mechanical design with two counter-rotating toothed levers precisely transfers the shifting input to the Pinion gearbox via a toothed roller. Every actuation of a Shimano GRX lever triggers a clearly defined gear change. The robust mechanics operate reliably, require minimal maintenance, and function completely independently of electronic components.
This design follows a principle that runs through many Tout Terrain products: technology should not exist to impress, but to perform. Not only when it is new, but also after years of intensive use.
Built for gravel riding, bikepacking adventures and long-distance touring
The name suffix “Allroad” accurately describes the intended range of use. The Shift:r Allroad was developed for bicycles that are not limited to a single type of terrain. Asphalt roads are just as much part of its playground as gravel tracks, forest trails or alpine passes.
Especially in these conditions, drop handlebars demonstrate their ergonomic advantages. Multiple hand positions reduce strain on the hands and shoulders during long rides, while Shimano GRX levers provide secure and intuitive control even on rough and loose surfaces.
Combined with a Pinion gearbox, the result is a drivetrain system that is equally suited for sporty riding and long-distance adventures.
- For gravel bikes, this means more riding enjoyment on challenging routes.
- For bikepacking adventures, it means increased reliability over thousands of kilometres.
- For touring bikes, it means less maintenance and more time spent riding.
Every detail carefully considered
The attention to detail is also evident in the construction.
The Shift:R Allroad is supplied with stainless steel shift cables featuring 49 individual wires (7x7 construction), a diameter of 1.1 mm and a 4.5 mm barrel end. The system allows precise fine-tuning via inline cable adjusters. The preferred shifting logic can be configured individually – for example, shifting into harder gears with the right lever and into easier gears with the left lever, as most riders intuitively expect. At the same time, the system remains service-friendly and can be easily maintained when required.
These details may seem insignificant at first glance. However, on long-distance adventures or during everyday use, they are exactly the details that make the difference experienced riders appreciate.
Conclusion: A Consistent Evolution
The Shift:R Allroad is not simply a new product in our portfolio. It is the consistent evolution of an idea that began with the Shift:R Road: combining the advantages of a Pinion gearbox with the ergonomics of modern drop handlebars.
The product is primarily designed for riders who do not configure their bicycle for a single discipline, but rather for many years of diverse adventures.
It combines the low maintenance and long-term durability of a Pinion gearbox with the intuitive operation of Shimano GRX shift/brake levers, creating a solution that performs equally well on gravel roads, asphalt and long-distance journeys.
True to Tout Terrain’s philosophy, the focus is not on the technology itself, but on what it enables: more control, more reliability and more freedom on every kilometre.
Because in the end, it is not about the shifting system – it is about the ride.
